Context
Large energy consumers face several major challenges, including:
- Significant penalties related to monthly net power peaks (peak shaving),
- A growing desire to optimize self-consumption over the long term,
- The need to reduce adjustment energy consumption, which is often costly and inefficient,
- The need for a power reserve to enable full islanding of the industrial site in the event of grid failure.
Energy storage appears to be a promising solution to address these issues. However, its implementation is still difficult to justify without a clear understanding of the technical and economic impacts.
Challenge
Develop a modelling and simulation solution that enables a large energy consumer to:
- Assess the relevance of a storage system for their specific needs,
- Properly size the storage (capacity, power, volume),
- Simulate different charging/discharging strategies to optimize simultaneously:
- Reduction of consumption peaks (peak shaving),
- Maximization of self-consumption,
- Reduction in the use of adjustment energy,
- Increase of potential islanding duration.
Objective
Develop or propose a solution capable of answering the following questions:
- What is the optimal battery size for my site?
- What is the total cost of such a system?
- What are the expected benefits (economic, energy-related, environmental)?
- Is it possible to model the energy behavior of a site or district using electrical data?
Currently lacking:
- Simulation tools tailored to large electricity consumers,
- An integrated vision covering all four objectives (peak shaving, self-consumption, adjustment energy, islanding),
- Clear benchmarks to assess the profitability of a storage system in a given environment.
