Context

With the increasing share of renewables in the energy mix, electricity availability is becoming more variable and less predictable. For an industrial player like CIMO, ensuring a reliable and cost-effective energy supply that is adapted to this new reality is a major strategic challenge. The goal is to balance flexibility, supply security, and cost control in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.

Challenge

How can one define an optimal sourcing strategy that accounts for the growing variability of electricity production (especially from renewables), market dynamics, and the specific needs of an industrial site?

Finding the right balance between short-term purchases (flexible but uncertain) and long-term contracts (stable but rigid) has become a complex task, currently lacking proper tools. A poor strategy can lead to excess costs or supply risks.

Objective

Develop a decision-support solution enabling an industrial consumer to:

  1. Anticipate the availability and variability of electricity (especially from renewables),
  2. Evaluate different sourcing scenarios by combining short-term and long-term strategies,
  3. Optimize decisions by considering economic, operational, and market factors,
  4. Integrate flexibility mechanisms (e.g. storage, load shedding).
