Context

District heating networks are complex infrastructures that are expensive to build — and even more expensive to renovate. In some cases, the theoretical lifespan of pipelines is largely exceeded, yet without major failures. That’s good news — but how can we truly benefit from it?

Currently, it is generally easy to identify a faulty pipe once a problem such as a leak occurs. However, it is much more difficult to assess the progressive degradation of a pipe between its initial and critical stages. Yet, these intermediate phases are strategically the most important for maintenance planning and investment optimization.

Challenge

Without accurate and accessible indicators, renovation decisions are still too often based on theoretical estimates or indirect signs. And yet, each intervention on the network is extremely costly and highly disruptive for users (major construction, service interruptions, etc.).

It is therefore crucial to assess the actual condition of the network before deciding to act.

Two key aspects must be monitored:

  • Thermal quality of the pipes: a network that loses too much heat becomes inefficient and expensive to operate.
  • Structural quality: mechanical resistance, water tightness, and long-term performance

Objective

Identify a method or tool (potentially requiring direct access to the pipelines) that can reliably, simply, and cost-effectively measure both the thermal and structural quality of a district heating pipe.

The goal is to base renovation decisions on real data, allowing to smartly extend the network’s lifespan… or act at the right moment.
